Sustainable Tourism

Students pursuing a technical degree in hotel administration learn how to properly maintain a luxury hotel throughout their time at Emprendedora. While in 10th and 11th grade, students are offered short-term internships to work directly at the Opportunity International’s Pacaya Lodge and Spa. Through this learning by-doing-model, students gain practical experience in the five key areas of hotel management: front desk, kitchen, restaurant, housekeeping, and maintenance. They graduate with the skills and certification to immediately make an impact in the hospitality sector of Nicaragua’s economy.

Areas of Emphasis

Business

Business is a major focus within the curriculum at Emprendedora. By teaching students business skills from an early age, we prepare our them to sustain existing family businesses or begin small businesses on their own. This paired with our technical degree program ensures that students will be able to succeed as entrepreneurs upon graduation.

English

The emphasis on English sets Emprendedora apart from most other high schools in the country — Students are expected to graduate with a B1 level of intermediate English proficiency. We more than double the state requirement for hours of English class per week, and english speakers volunteer through Zoom and in-person to give more individual attention to students. Video calls and in-person interactions are a unique opportunity for students to improve their English conversation and grammar skills with native speakers. Our special focus on English ensures that graduates from Emprendedora are eligible for university or higher earning positions in the workforce.

Technology

At Emprendedora, we implement professional technology courses to prepare students for a career or university education where technology skills are a prerequisite to success. They are exposed to Microsoft suite, Google Classroom, and basic website development over their five years of high school. These technical skills on allow students to quickly acclimate at university or in their chosen career following graduation.

In the sustainable agriculture technical degree track, students learn organic farming techniques to prepare them for a career in agriculture. Emprendedora has a chicken hatchery where students learn how to maintain chicken coops alongside an NOP USDA organic certified farm on the property. We produce a variety of produce such as lettuce, tomato, green pepper, cassava, and curcuma. Students spend up to 5 hours a week learning how to properly grow as well as harvest these crops, and graduates leave with the technical expertise and knowledge to maintain a successful sustainable organic farm.
